Lucy Dahl, the daughter of the famous writer, will receive the CBBC show's greatest accolade on behalf of her father in a special episode to be aired later this week.

The announcement comes on the centenary of Dahl's birth.

The episode, on September 15, will celebrate the work of Dahl with science presenter Greg Foot recreating the BFG's favourite drink, Frobscottle.

He will also show viewers how to make a peach fly and will treat Blue Peter presenters, Barney Harwood, Lindsey Russell and Radzi Chinyanganya to a three-course meal of Bubblegum in honour of one of Dahl's most popular books, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

The cast of the hit musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will close the show by performing Queen of Pop.

On hearing that her father would be posthumously awarded the badge, Lucy exclaimed: "Oh my gosh, this is extraordinary ... this is amazing, truly amazing.

"When you read a book you create your own version of the story, and you create your own pictures in your own mind. Dad felt that reading books was one of the most important things a child could do because he felt that imagination was so important."

Each year a handful of gold Blue Peter badges are awarded in recognition of outstanding achievements, bravery, inspiration and citizenship.

Film director Steven Spielberg recently received one while in the UK promoting the film The BFG.

Blue Peter editor Ewan Vinnicombe said: "Roald Dahl's literary magic continues to enchant generations of children and will do for years to come. Blue Peter is honoured to be able to celebrate his remarkable imagination in this special show."

Viewers can watch the Roald Dahl special, featuring Lucy Dahl, on CBBC, on September 15 at 5pm.
