It should be a no-brainer. Beautiful girl plus beautiful dress should always equal a stunning look.

But as we know only too well, it's not always that easy. And who among us wouldn't be just a little bit thrown off their game when they hear that a former flame (the lovely Ryan Gosling) is expecting a child with (the equally lovely) Eva Mendes?

Thankfully, Rachel is made of sterner stuff than some of us… She looks stunning in this fabulous Zuhair Murad cocktail dress. It may be screaming 'look at me', but under the circumstances, who could blame her?

Karen Gillan is certainly a trouper. No matter what on-screen horrors awaited her, the former Dr Who actress always faced them head on, usually in the tiniest of skirts. There were complaints, of course, from lots of narrow-minded nerds who preferred their eye candy to be a bit more clothed. We really didn't understand that.

But we do admire Karen for sticking to her style and continuing to show off those fabulous legs - on and off screen. Here she is at the premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy, and while we really want to love her look - especially how that colour works with her hair - we just can't bring ourselves to be that indulgent.

We do appreciate a quirky take on red-carpet wear, but this creased ensemble has more than a whiff of try-too-hard swirling around it, especially the, dare we say it, tacky gold trim. If only she could use that Tardis to go back in time…
