'Nobody’s reached out' - Zayn Malik admits he doesn’t speak to his former bandmates
Boyband star turned solo singer Zayn Malik has admitted he is only in contact with one of his former One Direction bandmates.
It’s been almost a full year since the 23-year-old quit the band, and he has since embarked on a solo career with the number one hit single Pillowtalk and a new album, Mind of Mine, due for release tomorrow.
The Bradford-born singer has spoken before about his disappointment over not being on speaking terms with the rest of the band – Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne – but this time he’s naming names.
In a brooding cover story for NME, Zayn offered a status update on his relationships (or lack of them) with his former bandmates.
“I’m still probably the closest to Liam. We talk on the phone. He congratulated me on my single, which was nice. I congratulated him on his Brit Award,” said Zayn, referring to One Direction’s win for Best British Video at last month’s ceremony.
“It was a good chat. We haven’t met up in a long time so we want to meet up.”
While he has built a bridge with Liam, Zayn noted that things haven’t been so smooth with the rest of his former bandmates and that he hasn’t seen any of them since breaking from the band last March.
“I tried to have contact but nobody’s reached out. So… whatever,” he added, before going on to discuss his “mysterious” public persona.
His comments echo his suggestion of underlying animosity during an interview with Billboard magazine in January.
“The truth of it is, you can think one thing about a situation and the total opposite can happen. I had every intention of remaining friends with everybody, but I guess certain phone numbers have changed and I haven't received calls from a lot of people.
“I've reached out to a few of them and not got a reply. Certain people have pride issues, but it's stuff you overcome in time.”
