ITV has denied that it plans to permanently move News At Ten to a later timeslot after it emerged it could be shifted by half an hour to accommodate a new entertainment show.
The broadcaster is planning to unveil an entertainment programme, with rotating presenters, next year and the news, hosted by Tom Bradby, could start at 10.30pm to make way for the programme.
But the broadcaster insisted that it had no plans to move the news permanently.
An ITV spokesman said: "We are looking at an entertainment show for the new year, more details will be confirmed in due course, including scheduling.
"There are occasions when the main bulletin moves for big entertainment event programming or sport. However, we have no plans to permanently move the news from the 10pm slot."
The news has been moved for sporting events, I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here! and documentaries such as the recent programme The Murder Of Sadie Hartley.
The Daily Mirror described the entertainment show as "Saturday Night Takeaway meets James Corden's Late, Late Show".
