New mum Maura Durrane set for prompt return to Today show hotseat
The latest RTE star to have a baby, chat show host Maura Derrane, is to follow in her colleague Claire Byrne’s footsteps with a prompt return to TV screens after giving birth to her first child.
The afternoon show presenter and her husband, Fine Gael TD John Deasy, welcomed baby boy Cal two weeks ago.
But the 43-year-old is due to return to full-time work less than four months after giving birth when the third season of Today comes back this autumn.
The show, which she co-hosts with Daithi O Se, returns for a new season, though the length of its run has not been confirmed.
“We have the go-ahead to return with Today in September so we’re looking forward to that,” Daithi said.
“Maura will be back, she’s in good form. The baby is just gorgeous, he has Maura’s eyes.”
Proud dad Daithi also said his own new addition to the family, Michael Og, is doing himself and wife Rita proud. But he joked that he and Maura will have to leave all talk of their new additions outside of the studio once they return to work.
“We are putting a ban on baby talk when we get back,” he joked.
Speaking to The Herald recently, Maura, who is employed by RTE on a contractual basis, said she is in a similar situation to Prime Time host Claire Byrne, who is pregnant with her second child and returned to work at Montrose last year after only 10 weeks.
“I could end up having nine weeks off only,” Maura said about maternity leave from RTE.
“ Everyone has asked me that, but I’ve always worked, I’d find it strange if I didn’t.
“I’m a contractor, like Claire. I get paid by my contract, I don’t get paid for maternity leave so it’s motivation to go back.”
New mum Maura announced her pregnancy in January and she said that people have been “fascinated by anyone over 40 having a child”.
She is currently resting at home as she bonds with Cal.
Daithi enjoyed a break from his parenting duties when he turned out at birthday celebrations for Newbridge silverware in Kildare.
After two months getting to know Micheal Og, he is getting back to work as presenter of the annual Rose of Tralee which will kick off again this summer.
“It’s nice being off the past two months but he’s getting very big and came out with a full head of hair,” said Daithi of his son.
“He laughed the other day and it was the best thing in the world.
“The annual Rose of Tralee pageant is now in full swing with the Kerry Rose competition kicking off this week.”
