Nadia Forde has slammed suggestions there’s anything “sordid” about her friendship with John Delaney.
The model turned singer told an interview with the Sunday Independent 'LIFE' magazine that she no longer speaks to the FAI boss. The interview was published on Sunday.
Speaking this morning on Today FM's Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show, Nadia told Ian she’s confused by some of the coverage of their friendship.
She appeared on the radio show to promote the second season of her 3e reality series 'Nadia: Chasing The Dream'. Prior to this morning's show, she was also asked about Delaney during her Late Late Show appearance on Friday night.
“Ah, here we go,” she replied to Dempsey when quizzed about it.
“I’m not saying anything. That was crazy.
“Basically I was asked ‘have you spoken to John’ and I said I hadn’t.
“The worst thing is it nearly insinuates that something was…,” she trails off.
“Guys, I’m 25, what the hell. He is a great guy and John and the FAI gave me a great opportunity singing the national anthem.
“Abroad, that’s a huge thing [to say you've done]. It’s a huge highlight of my career and my year last year.
“It makes it more sordid in some way.
“It’s really sad.”
The pair met during a 'Strictly Come Dancing for Soccer' fundraising event in late 2013 and a friendship blossomed.
When asked by the Sunday Independent if she was in contact with John Delaney, she replied: "No."
"Honestly? I don't understand it," she told LIFE when asked about the status of their friendship.
"I'm telling you, I don't know. I haven't really spoken to him since he started dating his new girlfriend [Emma English]. He got with her so that was that," she said.
However, she also said she was hopeful their friendship can be renewed.
"I thought we were friends. So it's a bit strange, if not hurtful. But I'm always at the end of the phone if he wants to chat, like I always was before. It's hard to understand," she added.
In an interview with the 'Irish Sun' last July, Delaney explained he had taken the singer under his wing.
"I think I'm more like a father figure. I'm 46 years of age, she is in her early 20s," he said.
"She is somebody I have a lot of respect for. She's got a great career as a model. It looks like she is heading for a pretty good career in terms of her singing.
"I wish her well in that for sure. We're great friends."
