EastEnders will heap more misery on the Mitchells when Ben Mitchell is left fighting for his life this month.

The Mitchells are still grieving the loss of matriarch Peggy Mitchell, played by Dame Barbara Windsor, but tragedy strikes again.

In scenes that will be broadcast on July 18, Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) and Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) receive distressing information.

Phil's son Ben (Harry Reid), who is Ian's half-brother, has been involved in an incident and is taken to hospital with critical injuries.

In desperation, Ian and Phil rush to the hospital and are then faced with a gruelling wait to find out if Ben will survive.

The bad news about Ben comes in the wake of his decision to quit working at The Arches.

In the BBC soap, Ben has made plans to work alongside his boyfriend Paul Coker (Jonny Labey) in the Cokers' funeral business.

But his hard-man father Phil is yet to fully embrace his sexuality.

EastEnders won plaudits in 2014 for the moving coming out scene between Johnny Carter (portrayed at that time by Sam Strike) and his father Mick (Danny Dyer).

In a plotline that subverted expectations, tough-guy Mick tenderly accepted his son's homosexuality.

With his son lying in a hospital bed, Phil has time to reflect on his behaviour to Ben.
