The American actor is best known for his memorable song and dance routines as cockney chimney sweep Bert in the classic children's film.

Speaking at the Los Angeles premiere of tap dancing documentary Tap World, where he was honoured for his achievements in dance, he said: "I didn't even start dancing until I was in my thirties and it was like flying.

"I wish I was better at it but I just had enough raw talent. I love it, I will dance at the drop of a hat. But I just saw a video on YouTube where they interviewed Judi Dench and Jeremy Irons asking who did the worst English accent in the history of movies and I won. They all said "sorry Dick"."

Earlier this year Van Dyke danced round his Malibu house in a music video for folk band The Dustbowl Revival and his moves caused an online sensation.

"Those young kids are virtuoso musicians and I couldn't control myself and started dancing and it kind of went viral. We are going to do another one I think, with more backyard dancing."

However, when asked about his biggest professional achievement, the Diagnosis Murder star is practical: "Living this long is probably the best thing I ever did," he said.
