LPGA slams Paulina Gretzky's sexy Golf Digest cover
The Ladies Professional Golf Association has slammed Golf Digest's latest cover featuring model Paulina Gretzky.
The golf bible's latest issue sees the model posing in barely there clothing while swinging a golf club - an otherwise irrelevant feature.
And it has angered LPGA members as many of the talented female golfers would have jumped at the chance to be featured on the cover and included in a multi-page spread.
“It’s frustrating for female golfers,” said Stacy Lewis, two time major winner.
two-time major winner Stacy Lewis, who has never been on the cover, told The New York Times.
“It’s kind of the state of where we’ve always been. We don’t get respect for being the golfers that we are. Obviously, Golf Digest is trying to sell magazines. But at the same time you’d like to see a little respect for the women’s game.”
Fellow pro Juli Inskter likened the magazine's latest move to replication the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.
“It’s frustrating because it’s Golf Digest; it’s not Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue,” she said.
“I think they should maybe recognize some of the great women golfers that we have. It’s like, ‘What do you have to do to get a little respect?’
I’m guaranteeing you right now, it was not a woman editor who chose that cover.”
Editor in chief Jerry Tarde defended the choice to feature Gretzky, a model who rose to fame mainly because of her Instagram account.
"Sports figures, celebrities and models have appeared on Golf Digest covers since the magazine’s beginning,” she said.
“Paulina ranks at the high end of the golf celebrity scene today, and she has a compelling story to tell. She also might get some new people interested in the game.”
