Broadcaster Gay Byrne is recovering after undergoing two hip replacement surgeries within the space of two weeks.

Gay, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year, suffered fractures in both hips resulting in the extensive surgery.

His wife, Kathleen Watkins, said he is "back on his feet" but taking things easy. "He is walking quite well. But the medication is very heavy. We are doing the best we can. We hope for the best," she said.

Kathleen said several of Gay's fellow RTÉ broadcasters, including Joe Duffy and Ryan Tubridy, had visited him in recent weeks.

"Friends have been coming and going. His RTÉ pals and producers came to see him, Ryan and Joe. The lads were terrific. They had a great time together," she said.

"On Saturday, we were out at lunch with another eight from RTÉ so we are doing outings like that."

Gay has been off Lyric FM airwaves since he informed listeners of his cancer diagnosis.

Kathleen is enjoying having him home and caring for him.

"I don't miss him on the radio," she said. "I'm just glad to have him at home."
