'I’ve let people down, I’m truly sorry' - Ant McPartlin admits to drug and alcohol addiction
Ant McPartlin, of Ant and Dec, has admitted to struggling with drug and alcohol addiction and plans to check himself into rehab.
Speaking to the Sun, Mr Mc Partlin (41) revealed that he had become addicted to prescription drugs and alcohol after a battle with depression.
The TV star apologised to his fans and admitted that he had “let people down”, as well as thanking his wife Lisa Kirby and co-star Declan Donnelly for their support.
He now faces a two month stint in a rehab facility.
Mr McPartlin revealed the circumstances which allowed him to slide into addiction during his candid interview with the Sun. He admitted that chronic pain caused by a knee injury, failure to conceive with his wife and mounting depression drove him to drug dependency.
Mr McPartlin suffered chronic pain after knee surgery two years ago and began taking the opioid painkiller Tramadol, which he soon became addicted to. His friends became concerned when he began to mix the drug with alcohol, worsening the effects.
In a statement, Mr McPartlin said: “The first step is to admit to yourself you need help. I’ve let people down. I’m truly sorry. I feel like I have let a lot of people down and for that I’m truly sorry. I want to thank my wife, family and closest friends through this really difficult time.”
“I have spoken out because I think it is important that people ask for help if they are going through a rough time and get the proper treatment to help their recovery.”
The Sun further reported that Mr McPartlin became emotional when he confessed his problems to long time on-screen partner,Mr Donnelly (Dec). They report that he had not been aware of the extent of his friends’ struggles, but had encouraged him to seek professional help.
Mr McPartlin underwent a second knee surgery last Tuesday and is expected to be in a wheelchair for the next few weeks. It is not known where he will be undergoing rehabilitation.
Mr McPartlin first appeared on-screen in the children’s show, Byker Grove, playing the role of PJ opposite Mr Donnelly, where the pair become friends on and off set.
The pair have hosted a series of programmes including Pop Idol and Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, as well as Britain’s Got Talent and I’m a Celebrity.
Mr McPartlin, who has amassed a £60 million fortune, signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with ITV in 2007, worth around £30 million, with co-host Mr Donnelly, making them some of the highest earners in British television.
