'It's so important to check yourself and put your health first' - Roz Purcell
With Movember kicking off in just a few days time, Roz Purcell told Independent.ie how both men and women can get involved in raising funds.
With men dying six years before women on average globally, The Movember Foundation aims to raise awareness and generate conversation around men's health, including mental illness and prostate cancer, during the month of Novemeber.
However, you don't have to be male to raise awareness, as Roz Purcell is determined to show.
Mo Sista Roz became involved with Movember in 2015 because of her own interest in health, as well as her close relationship with her dad.
"I might not be able to grow a moustache, but I want to show people what you can do! Everyone can get involved," she said.
"I’m organising a Hike with Roz event, and hopefully we’ll raise some money."
"There are three girls in my family, so I was like my dad’s token son growing up."
"I spend a lot of time with my dad, we’re super close, we always have been."
Roz (26) said that, when it came to promoting awareness for the campaign, she put herself "in other people's shoes."
"I just put myself in other peoples’ shoes and want to help stop men dying so young. If cancer is caught early, it’s much more manageable."
"It’s so important to check yourself and put your health first."
Roz, whose sister Rachel was diagnosed with leukaemia in January, has always been an advocate for cancer awareness.
"I’ve always been involved with promoting cancer awareness, even before it came into my family," she said.
"Set your alarm for every six months to remind you to book a blood test and full check up."
"Skin cancer is on the rise in Ireland too. There’s this image that the perfect girl is tanned, we need to change that and pass on to young girls the important message of checking yourself. Just wear fake tan!"
"It’s important to tell younger generations that things can be caught."
There are three ways you can raise money this Movember: Grow a moustache for 30 days, take a physical activity challenge, or host an event or run your own fundraiser.
