'I'm not going to talk about my private life with a total stranger,' says Michael Fassbender on Alicia Vikander romance
Michael Fassbender has opened up about his decision to so adamantly keep his private life out of the spotlight.
The Irish actor (39), who hails from Kerry and has two Oscar nominations under his belt, has been dating Swedish actress Alicia Vikander (27) for two years after first meeting on the set of The Light Between Oceans in 2014.
Now that promotion for the film has begun, the pair have carefully chosen and constructed their interviews so as not to make it about them, as two of the hottest stars in Hollywood (Vikander just won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in March).
They gave a joint interview to Entertainment Weekly discussing the movie and clearly explained their decision not to give into tabloid culture.
"I'm not going to talk about my private life with a total stranger, unless I feel like I need to. Why would I? I don't," Fassbender said.
As for falling in love off-screen, the actors said it was a natural process and their attraction to one another was immediate.
"It wasn’t the first time in a movie either of us had played somebody who is falling in love. There is an element of separation there. If I’m playing a murderer, I don’t go out and start murdering people," he added.
Vikander echoed his statements, saying: "I think we’ve made a clear statement that we keep certain things just between us. It was very easy to unite, but that’s quite personal."
They have made exceptions to their own rule of course, mostly with Fassbender gushing on a handful of occasions about falling for the Swedish star.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Fassbender said their chemistry was there "from the beginning" when they first met "properly" on set.
"She's a very fierce performer and very brave, testing the boundaries and how far you can go. She's got all of those things in spades."
