RTE star Maura Derrane has opened up about sharing parenting duties with her husband John Deasy.

The Today host (45) welcomed her first child Cal last year, with her husband of 10 years. And while they both have high profile careers - she as a presenter on RTE's flagship daytime talk show and he as a Fine Gael TD, but at home it's far from glitz and glamour.

"Things have changed certainly," she told the current issue of VIP Magazine.

"But I think all women are going to do more than men as time goes on, because I think the child wants you more. Cal comes to me more than he goes John and that's just the way it is.

"The funny thing is that you always end up, as a woman, doing the cooking, the washing and the bathing. I insist on sharing things out.

"It's just not possible to do everything as well as your job. John will get up and I will sleep, and we will take turns at that."

The popular broadcaster explained that she holds her other half to the same standards as herself and emphasised the importance of balance in their home.

"If John was in the house and I'm out, I would expect to come home and for things to be done, like I would get them done, even if I have to tell him what to do.

"He knows things now himself though and he would know as much as I would about where everything is and that's so important. He'd be very good at the nappy changing and dressing too."

The refreshingly honest star added she is in "such a good place". "I really want to appreciate my time with Cal, spend time with John and make the best of it all."
