Simply Red star Mick Hucknall has revealed his abandonment by his Irish mother when he was just three years old negatively affected him throughout his life.
The 54-year-old 'Fairground' singer is now happily married to Gabrielle Wesberry and they have a seven year old daughter, Romy True.
However, the red-haired star was famous for his penchant for dating numerous women in the 90s and 2000s, including Helena Christensen, Catherine Zeta Jones, and Martine McCutcheon.
He has said that his inability to commit to a woman originated with his mother's abandonment.
Mick lived alone with his dad Reg in Manchester until he was 18 and it was during his teenage years that he missed his mother most.
"That's when boys really need their mother because in a way she's your first girlfriend and she instils a sense of confidence" he told the Sunday World.
I felt ugly. I became very inward looking. I was an easy target to be bullied. And, of course, I had red hair, which multiplies it by ten."
He added, "A three year old boy being abandoned by a mother is not exactly a good start in life."
His mother, whose father came from Offaly, made contact in 1997 claiming she was dying of cancer, but her story turned out to be untrue.
These days, however, Mick is grateful to have a family of his own, "It's a great feeling to have a family that I never had."
He said, "Now I'm in a totally different situation. I'm married, I've got a daughter and even this dog is a girl, so I'm surrounded by females now. It's a real learning curve for somebody that never really had that kind of family."
Simple Red release their new album, Big Love, on Friday May 29.
