Hollywood actor Mark Ruffalo has joined the likes of Christy Moore, Glen Hansard and Sharon Shannon in opposing fracking in Ireland. He offered his support to the Stop The Study campaign.

The Avengers star's support comes as a coalition of anti-fracking groups, including Love Leitrim and Good Energies Alliance Ireland, prepare to brief TDs and Senators in Leinster House on Thursday on concerns over fracking in Ireland.

In a statement, the 47-year-old star said “Across the United States, people are being poisoned by contaminated water and air from fracking operations. The vast majority of over 500 peer-reviewed scientific studies demonstrate risks and harms from fracking.

"I stand with the people of Ireland to say stop the bogus industry-run fracking study! The governments of Ireland and Northern Ireland need to do their job and protect the people against this dangerous and toxic practice.

"Stop the study and say no to fracking!”

This isn't the first time the Hollywood actor has been outspoken about environmental issues.

Earlier this year, the actor joined Leonardo DiCaprio to launch "100%", a campaign aimed at making energy from renewable sources available to everyone - and making it affordable.
