The Great British Bake Off continues to be a sweet success, as over nine million viewers tuned in for Wednesday night's episode.

The BBC1 show continued to dominate the ratings, with some 9.6 million fans watching former Star Baker Marie Campbell being eliminated after failing the technical challenge during Biscuit Week, in the second instalment of the sixth series.

An average audience of 8.9 million viewers also saw 41-year-old travel photographer Ian Cumming crowned Star Baker.

Both Alvin Magallanes and Nadiya Jamir Hussain proved disasters do not mean elimination, particularly Nadiya after host Sue Perkins accidentally broke her biscuit lid.

Scottish grandmother Campbell, 66, said competing in the Bake Off had been on her bucket list.

She got the boot after presenting judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry with non-uniform biscotti Italiano and a disappointing biscuit box, as well as failing to complete the technical challenge.

"Every moment was a fabulous experience for me. Some grannies want to bungee jump, but for me it was always to get on Bake Off," she said.

She insisted there was no bitterness regarding her exit from the show, explaining: "The show has given me more confidence in my baking, and where Paul said my Madeira cake was perfect on the show, I just have to keep rewinding that bit on the tape!

"It has been a fantastic experience for me, and I have enjoyed it from beginning to end. I live in a small village and I am only now getting used to being recognised. It is a bit surreal, but I just have a bit of a giggle about it. The family are really proud."
