George Clooney has told how a child put a gun to his head while he made a documentary in Darfur.

The star, 52, made a film, A Journey To Darfur, about the genocide in the region of western Sudan in 2006.

"We got stopped in the middle of nowhere, where we shouldn't have been," he told Variety.

"A little 10-year-old kid came over with a Kalashnikov assault rifle to my head, basically wanted to get us out of the truck."

The Gravity actor told Variety that he had no political ambitions, but wanted to use his voice to instigate change.

"I like the ability to shine light and make it loud," he said. "But boy, the idea of administrating and legislating. What a nightmare."

George and his father, a journalist, smuggled cameras into the Darfur refugee camps to show the impact of the civil war.

In 2008, the UN estimated that 300,000 people had died because of the war, and it was reported last year that more than 1.4 million displaced people still rely on food handouts in camps throughout the region.

The actor has previously said of the conflict: "In the case of Darfur it's been the greatest failure of my life."
