George Clooney finally reveals details of romantic 25-minute proposal to wife Amal
George Clooney finally persuaded his wife Amal to answer his proposal after airing his concerns that his hip could be "thrown out" if he waited any longer.
The 54-year-old actor proposed to lawyer Amal, 38, in April 2014, and he's now opened up about popping the question. While many would expect the proposal to have been intensely romantic, things nearly went very wrong for George - as Amal had no idea what he was doing.
"Had the ring hidden behind her, I had music playing... She reaches around and pulls out the box, and I've got just the ring sitting in there, and she pulls it out and she looks at it and she's like, 'It's a ring.' Like somebody had left it there some other time!" he laughed to talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.
"And I'm like, doing all the moves you can do with my face. And I got down on my knee and I said, 'I couldn't imagine spending the rest of my life without you,' and she kept looking at the ring, and she's looking at me, and she's like, 'Oh my God.'
"And we now know because there is a playlist, so we know how long it actually took, and it's like 25 minutes, 25 minutes! And finally like literally I said, 'Look, I hope the answer's yes, but I need an answer 'cause I'm 52 and I could throw out my hip pretty soon!' and then she said, 'Oh, oh yes!' So it worked out really well."
George explained the proposal was "one of those horrible moments" because the couple hadn't discussed marriage at all before he decided to pop the question. He realised he wanted Amal to be his wife when they'd been dating for around six months, so took it upon himself to plan a special way to ask the big question.
None of it went easily - Amal suggested getting takeaway when part of George's preparation had been to create a romantic meal. He'd even arranged for a special song to come one when he wanted to propose, but that was foiled as Amal decided to get straight up after eating and wash the dishes.
George isn't holding any of that against her though. "You know it was one of those funny things, from the minute we met we just hit it off, from the minute we met we sort of felt like we were going to be together," he said.
The couple married in Italy in September 2014.
