Eva Mendes buried her brother days before she gave birth to her second child.
The actress' older sibling Juan Carlos, 53, died on April 17 after a long battle with throat cancer and Eva and partner Ryan Gosling were preparing to become parents for a second time.
He was remembered at a memorial on April 26 at the Church of the Recessional in Glendale, California, and now Eva has broken her silence about the emotional week she lost her brother.
"Losing my brother brought our family closer, and we were already close to begin with," she tells the new issue of Latina magazine.
"Just to see everybody be there for one another and show up, I feel so lucky to have them. And then they were there for me when (daughter) Amada was born.
"We had a funeral service for him (Juan Carlos) and that same week I had the baby. So it was really, really intense and obviously beyond heartbreaking, but also kind of beautiful."
The Hitch star also tells Latina motherhood has made her rethink her career priorities, insisting only "something really special" would take her away from her kids.
"Right now I feel very fortunate to be home with my kids," she says. "I feel so lucky, and I'm just taking advantage of that."
And she's not sure she wants to add to her family, insisting her two girls are enough for now.
"It's early for me to make any big statement about having (more) children," she added. "My older little girl is not yet two years old. My little one is still an infant, and right now its really about surviving those nights and trying to enjoy this time as much as possible with them, and start the bond between (daughters) Esmeralda and Amada.
"It's a really, really special time. I'm loving it."
