Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery is to become Oxfam's first Humanitarian Ambassador, helping it raise funds and highlighting its work responding to emergencies around the world.

Last year Michelle travelled with the charity to Jordan to meet Syrian refugees, then on her return helped launch Oxfam's "12 Days of Giving" campaign, which raised vital funds to support refugees during the harsh winter.

She has also supported Oxfam's appeal for emergency aid for those in desperate need in Gaza.

She said: "Travelling with Oxfam and meeting families whose lives have been torn apart by the conflict in Syria, stripped of everything they know - just trying to get by each day with the very basics they need to survive - was utterly heartbreaking. But thanks to Oxfam and the incredible support of the British public, they're not alone. I witnessed first-hand the incredible work Oxfam do every day ensuring those people have the support they need to get back on their feet."

The announcement comes on World Humanitarian Day, which aims to recognise and celebrate those who face danger and adversity in their work helping others.

The charity's chief executive Mark Goldring said: "Michelle's contribution to helping raise vital funds for Syrian refugees and awareness of their situation over the last year has been unwavering. She is passionate, empathetic and eager to learn more about how we work to support us in the best way she can.

"On World Humanitarian Day, when we celebrate the heroism and commitment of those that work to help support people in dire need, we are thrilled to announce Michelle as our first ever Humanitarian Ambassador. It is an important role that will undoubtedly help us achieve our ultimate goal of keeping people and hope alive in times they need it most."

Oxfam UK ambassadors include singer Paloma Faith and TV and radio personality Zoe Ball, while global ambassadors include actor Bill Nighy, singer Annie Lennox, and actress Dame Helen Mirren.
