Crystal Swing singer Dervla Burke has announced that she is expecting her first child with husband Tim in January.

The 24-year-old revealed the news less than a year after her wedding to farmer Tim O'Connor.

“When I saw that the test was positive I couldn’t keep it to myself,” she told the Evening Echo.

“Tim was working on the farm at the time but I ran out straight away and said there was something I needed to tell him. He was shocked at first but a good kind of shocked. It was something we both really wanted. I must have done about 10 tests after that just to be sure but we didn’t announce the pregnancy until I had confirmation from a doctor."

Dervla shot to fame in 2010 with her mother Mary and brother Derek following the success of their country music band Crystal Swing.

She said that her mum and brother are delighted to welcome a new addition to the family and have dubbed it "Baby Swing."

"Derek’s already calling the child 'Baby Swing' and it’s starting to stick," she said.

"I’m just hoping the baby won’t grow up with that nickname!”

The Cork native said that she hopes her child will inherit her musical talents so they can one day perform together.

“I see how happy it makes my mum when she’s watching the two of us singing. I’m hoping that this child will have the musical gene so I can experience that same feeling some day."

"It would be wonderful to have my child on stage with me. Tim, on the other hand, is very sporty so he’s hoping baby will get the sporty gene. We’re very different in that respect.”

With the baby due soon after Christmas, Dervla said she "couldn’t think of a better belated Christmas present."

Dervla and Tim wed in a country-themed wedding last August, which was later broadcast on RTE.
