David Beckham was a good sport as he got slimed at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Sports Awards last night.

The 39-year-old attended the ceremony at Los Angeles' UCLA Pauley Pavilion with his sons Cruz and Romeo, who he has with fashion star wife Victoria, after it was announced he would receive the first ever Legend Award.

The trio arrived looking dapper, with both boys sporting their dad's stylish hairdo. However their clean cut appearance didn't last long as David invited his kids on stage to accept his accolade with him.

Before they knew it, a blast of golden slime covered them from head to toe.

It was an appropriate colour choice, with David's nickname being Golden Balls following his successful soccer career.

The sportsman was thrilled to be the recipient of the award and advised others to do what he did to achieve their goals.

“When I was young, my dream was to be a professional soccer player," he said during his brief acceptance speech. "If you have dreams and you believe in yourself, your dreams can come true. Thank you very much."

Nickelodeon recently explained why David's role model status was honoured.

"He exemplifies the qualities every kid aspires to achieve and his name is the first that comes to mind when we think of his sport," the company said in a statement released.

The ceremony was hosted by former NFL defensive and Live! With Kelly and Michael host Michael Strahan. He too was excited to be involved with Nickelodeon.

"I have kids and I have always watched the show and it is fun - it’s always a good time. My kids have always watched Nickelodeon and actually my twins are going to participate, they are going to be my assistants. I always think about what will make them happy and I think the biggest thing is if they get Daddy slimed," he told The Hollywood Reporter.
