Byrne and her fiance Gerry Scollan welcomed their son Patrick into the world last October.

After less than three months on maternity leave, Byrne was back in the 'Prime Time' studio with co-host Miriam O'Callaghan last night.

The presenter was back at the helm of her Radio One slot 'Saturday with Claire Byrne' over the weekend and returns to the 'Morning Ireland' breakfast team this week.

LUCKY

The 36-year-old, who operates on a contractual basis at the national broadcaster, said that as someone who is self-employed she had always planned to take a short stint off before going back to work at the station.

"It was my own decision to go back in January. My hours are flexible enough to be honest and it would be a different story if I was working 8am to 9pm most days, so in that sense I'm very lucky," she said. "Gerry will be at home in the evenings when I have 'Prime Time' so it should work."

Byrne, who spent a quiet Christmas at her family home in Co Laois along with her two pregnant sisters, said that she has a new perspective on life since her bundle of joy arrived.

"The first six weeks are really difficult and nothing can prepare you. It's like a juggernaut -- no matter how many books you read nothing can prepare you for it. We're through that now and he's sleeping really well.

"I'm obsessed with him, he's just fantastic.

"No matter how organised you are you're never really ready, but it's amazing."

Byrne told the Irish Independent she made the most of quality time in her "little cocoon" with the newborn.

She gave birth to Patrick at the National Maternity Hospital on Dublin's Holles Street, with IT consultant Scollan by her side.

The proud parents revealed last May that they were expecting a child together.
