Some viewers took to Twitter, suggesting that the Chaser - Mark Labbett, otherwise known as The Beast - had been given extra time in one round during Wednesday's episode.

The clock spent an extra second at the 10-second mark before ticking down to nine.

A spokesma n for The Chase said: "There was an error on the clock on last night's episode of the Chase.

"This error happened during the editing process and not in the studio when the show was being recorded so could not have affected the outcome in any way."

Fans of the quiz show posted online when the Chaser appeared to gain an extra second in the general knowledge round, with a prize fund of £27,000 at stake.

Viewer Chris Floyd wrote: "The show is a fix!!! @ITV @ITVChase try and explain this one!"

Rachael Leach tweeted: "Added an extra second on for the chaser! 10 seconds turn to 10 seconds! #TheChase".

The four-person team made it through to the final round and won the prize money of £27,000, beating the Chaser.
