Cate Blanchett says she had 'many' past relationships with women

Actress Cate Blanchett has opened up about having past relationships with women.

In a candid interview with Variety, the Oscar winner revealed she had romantic experiences with both men and women, saying she doesn't see what the big deal is.

She is currently promoting Carol, a film about two female partners and she was asked if she ever had any female partners and she said: "Yes. Many times."

"I never thought about it. I don’t think Carol thought about it."

The 42-year-old, who won two Oscars for Best Actress in Blue Jasmine and Best Supporting Actress in The Aviator, said Carol was difficult to finance due to its primarily female narrative and called for further gender equality in Hollywood.

"We have to push forward," Blanchett said. "What industry has parity pay for women? None. Why would we expect this industry to be any different?"

"It was so hard [to make Carol]", she added. "Midrange films with women at the center are tricky to finance. There are a lot of people laboring under the misapprehension that people don’t want to see them, which isn’t true."

However it appears that her risk may have paid off as the film is already generating early Academy Award buzz, even before it premieres at the Cannes Film Festival this week.
