Olivia Colman has ruled out a romance between the characters played by her and David Tennant in Broadchurch because they would "giggle too much".

But the actress said she has not seen any scripts for the third series and has "no idea" what twists and turns the story will take next.

Colman was speaking on the red carpet at the Moet British Independent Film Awards in London where she won the best supporting actress gong for her role in The Lobster.

Hit ITV crime drama Broadchurch sees Colman's Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller and Tennant's Detective Inspector Alec Hardy as work colleagues and friends in a coastal town.

The first series was a phenomenon with viewers kept on the edge of their seats waiting to find out who murdered an 11-year-old local boy - a mystery investigated by the two detectives.

Colman said she does not think Miller and Hardy will ever become more than friends. "I don't think we could do it anyway. I think we'd giggle too much.

"It would be very sweet," she told the Press Association.

Colman then joked that she is going to ask the show's writer Chris Chibnall "not to write that", adding: "Because I don't think we could."

The second series of Broadchurch focused on the trial of the murder suspect and the reopening of another murder case.
