'Benedict Cumberbatch asked me out on a date when I was in LA', says Ruth O'Neill
Ruth O'Neill might be kicking herself now, but actor of the moment Benedict Cumberbatch asked her out on a date when she lived in LA.
The former model was a presenter for showbiz channel E! News for five years before moving home this summer.
Ruth admitted "quite a few" famous faces asked her out during her time in Hollywood, one of them being the Sherlock star and Oscar nominee.
He married Sophie Hunter earlier this year and they had a son called Christopher in June.
"Actually a funny one who did ask me out a few years ago was Benedict Cumberbatch," she said. "I met him at a friend's birthday and we chatted away for the night.
"He was really cool and interesting and smart, but we never did end up on our date. My friends got a laugh out of that one," she added.
The 27-year-old said the dating scene in Tinsel Town was "tiring" and she prefers Irish guys.
"There's a lot to be said for having the same references from your childhood," she said.
"You can't fault an American man on his enthusiasm though, they're a lot more into impressing you.
"I only had one serious boyfriend over there who was also Irish, and it didn't end great," she continued.
"There are two reasons the dating scene isn't fantastic.
"Firstly, everyone's priority is work, so that's mainly what they're thinking and talking about.
"Secondly, there are so many good-looking people that it's like men are waiting for someone better around the corner.
"They also date about five people at the same time. It's hard to know where you stand," she told VIP magazine.
While her life seemed charmed in LA, Ruth said it was the right time to move home but she wouldn't rule out heading to the Big Apple.
Since returning home, she has been in talks to front an entertainment show on RTE called Bounce and has also guest presented Xpose.
However, if her career goals don't work out here, she isn't afraid to move again.
"I don't want to jinx anything by talking about it - I'm having meetings and seeing what's going on at the moment," she said.
"I'd love to stay if there was something here but if there's not I'm willing to move again."
