Banderas: I'm ready to play Picasso
Antonio Banderas has revealed he feels prepared to tackle the role of Pablo Picasso.
The Spanish actor will portray the artist in Carlos Saura's drama 33 Dias, which will star Gwyneth Paltrow as French photographer Dora Maar, who was Picasso's lover.
"I've been preparing for a long time because we were supposed to shoot the movie a couple of years ago," he said.
"(There were) structural problems with rights, and as soon as they fix that, we will do it."
The Mask Of Zorro star continued: "It means a lot to me, not just because of the complexity of the mind of Picasso but because he was born in the same town as me in Malaga, so his shadow is enormous.
"He left Malaga practically at the same time (as me) age-wise and any admiration I feel for him is enormous. And so I would like to portray him. I rejected the role in another moment of my past, but I think now I am ready."
Antonio has joined the cast of The Expendables 3 alongside the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham and Wesley Snipes, as talkative and excitable sharpshooter and ex-war veteran Galgo.
"I was very happy when my friend Sly called and invited me to be a part of it. You always have to say, 'I'll have to read the script first', but I knew what they were doing. I had seen The Expendables so I had that reference. Sly allowed me to do a lot of things with the script and character," the 54-year-old actor said.
But he admitted: "(Action) may not be my favourite genre as an actor, but as a spectator, I enjoy it. I like more independent movies, where you can explore complexity in roles."
