The Today FM broadcaster, fresh from seven weeks of Rugby World Cup coverage on TV3, said he and his wife of 20 years have mastered the balance of making their marriage work. Matt may be the boss on the airwaves, but at home, he doesn't call the shots.

"At home, Aileen is the boss, absolutely," he told the current issue of VIP Magazine.

"And that's the way it should be too, but on the radio show I do ask the tough questions and I would cover the big political news stories. I'm not too tough, I hope."

He added that the secret to their happiness is laughter.

"I suppose you'd hope to still be laughing," he explained.

To which Aileen responded: "Which thankfully we are. And you've got to let some stuff wash over you too."

Aileen, a former barrister and media personality, said she was happy to leave her law career after welcoming their first two children and later, xxx more.

"I don't regret giving up work," she said. "It was a big decision when i made it and it was one we deliberated over for a long time. Because it was something I had always wanted to do and something I nearly killed myself doing for four years and through two pregnanxcies. But once the decision was made, I didn't regret it."
