A date was set today for former Another Level star Dane Bowers to face trial on an assault charge.

Bowers, 35, has pleaded not guilty to one count of assault by beating against his ex-fiancee Sophia Cahill in Croydon, south London, in January.

He appeared at Croydon Magistrates' Court, where he was told that his trial will take place at the same court on July 27.

It is expected to last four hours.

There will also be a "ground rules" hearing at the same court on June 29 , which Bowers is excused attending.

Bowers, dressed in a light brown shirt and black trousers, had his conditional bail renewed at the end of the 10-minute hearing. He is not allowed to contact Ms Cahill, directly or indirectly.

Bowers, a former Brit School student, became famous in the late 1990s as a member of R&B band Another Level and after the group disbanded he sang a duet, Out Of Your Mind, with Victoria Beckham.

He went on to appear in Celebrity Big Brother in 2010.

Bowers has also appeared in reality-documentary show The Big Reunion on ITV2 where he was part of a band called 5th Story with fellow solo singers Gareth Gates, Kenzie, Kavana and Adam Rickitt.
