Being permanently in the spotlight takes its toll on every aspect of a celebrity’s life, and nowhere is it more evident than in the marriages of the world’s stars.

While some unions can last a lifetime, others fail to make it past the two-year mark, let alone the two-month one.

Rebecca Adlington and Harry Needs

The 27-year-old Olympian married fellow swimmer Harry Needs (24) in August of 2014. Then after 18 months of marriage the pair announced their separation on Wednesday. Together they have a nine-month-old daughter Summer and rumours point to the pressures of parenthood as the cause of the split. Other whispers say it was Adlington’s new-found confidence that saw her move on from her “rock” Needs.

Katie and Alex’s 2010 wedding lasted just under a year although the divorce proceedings dragged on for 14 months. While they married in February 2010 in a low-key Las Vegas wedding it wasn’t until March 2012 that the divorce was legalled granted. Katie cited “unreasonable behaviour” as her reason for wanting to exit the union to the cage-fighting and cross-dressing Reid. The mother-of-five also said she didn’t want to be the man in the relationship.

Kerry Katona and George Kay

Kerry married rugby player George Kay in a lavish ceremony in September 2014 with 150 guests in attendance. Then in October 2015 she announced she was divorcing him. He has since appeared in court charged with assaulting the former singer and for allegedly and unlawfully possessing a Taser gun. The Atomic Kitten star appeared on Loose Women back in November still wearing her wedding ring and broke down admitting that she still loved Kay even though they no longer live together.

Amy and Blake’s relationship was a very public affair with songs written about it and photos of their every move published in papers around the world. They married in Florida in May 2007 but Blake filed for divorce in January 2009 after pictures of her, in the Caribbean with another man, emerged. At the time Amy said she was in love and off drugs. She also said that her relationship with Blake was based solely on them “doing drugs.”

Most people forget these were ever pair but you’d be forgiven as the union only lasted six months. The actors married in December 2006 and divorce proceedings began in May 2007. Just like Jennifer Anniston and Brad Pitt, this pair also kept quiet about their relationship and subsequent break-up. However, in 2014 she published her autobiography Jennifer’s Way and wrote about a mystery ex who could be cold, cocky and arrogant.

Cheryl and Jean Bernard Fernandez Versini

For the time being she still carries Jean B’s name even though Cheryl is currently dating One Direction’s Liam Payne. Cheryl and Jean Bernard, after just a few months of courtship, tied the knot in a secret ceremony in Mustique in July 2014. The news surprised everyone. Rumours began to circulate afterwards about the language barrier damaging their relationship. Then in January of this year it was revealed that Cheryl had initiated divorce proceedings against the Frenchman, for his “unreasonable behaviour.”

Kim and Kris’s marriage lasted 72 days. The reality star began dating the professional basketball player in October 2010 and they became engaged in May 2011. They married in a lavish ceremony in August 2011 and the whole affair was filmed for a two-part E! special. The programme aired in October 2011 and Kim filed for divorce on October 31 of the same year. It was hailed as a publicity stunt. The divorce played out for almost 20 months until it was finalised in June 2013.

Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock

Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock dated on and off between 2001 and 2003 before joining forces once again in 2006. They married on a yacht in Saint-Tropez in July 2006, with Pamela in a white string bikini and Kid Rock in a white T-shirt. A message was sent to media outlets, reportedly from the pair, describing the event as “the best, most romantic wedding of all time.” By November of 2006 the marriage had come to an end with both heading to the courthouse to file for divorce proceedings. Kid Rock got their 53 minutes before Pamela.

Britney Spears and Jason Alexander

Pamela and Kim are pipped at the post by Britney when it comes to shortest marriage. Britney married her childhood friend Jason in Las Vegas in 2004 after flying him there in a private jet. When Britney’s management got wind of the wedding shortly afterwards Jason was informed that the union was to be annulled. This marriage holds the title for shortest union, at 55 days in length.

The model and rapper’s marriage did officially make it past the two-year mark, but just by a whisker. They married in Somerset in September 2013 but by the summer of 2015 rumours of divorce began to swirl. So too did tales of marriage counselling on their two-year anniversary. Then in February of this year divorce proceedings were finally filed.
