Former doyenne of the RTÉ newsroom Anne Doyle is the latest celebrity to back the ‘Yes’ campaign in the upcoming marriage referendum.
Doyle gave former RTE colleague Aengus MacGrianna away at his Ballymacgarvey wedding to Terry Gill in July 2014, says she is "optimistic" Ireland will vote yes.
“Oh, I will absolutely be voting ‘Yes’ on the 22nd,” Doyle said. “‘We’ll see how it goes and you have to respect how people feel about these things, which way or whatever, but I will certainly be voting yes."
"I really hope people will come out to vote too – because it was a hard fought campaign for people to have a vote, particularly women. I’m optimistic," she said.
Recently cited as one of Ireland’s leading gay icons in the ‘Sunday Independent’, Doyle occasionally “pops into” Dublin gay bar The George to play a spot of bingo.
The former news anchor has ties to Ireland’s drag community; her partner Dan McGrattan is the uncle of well-known drag performer Veda – who hosts a weekly entertainment night at The George titled ‘Space N Veda’.
Doyle, 63, has no desire to tie the knot herself but considers herself ‘very lucky’ to have met her long term partner Dan.
‘I don’t know about settled – I’m very happy, I’m very lucky to have met a wonderful man,’ she said.
