American Pie singer Don McLean 'arrested on domestic violence charge'

American Pie singer Don McLean has been arrested in Maine on a domestic violence charge.

Jail supervisor Corporal Brad Woll said Mr McLean was arrested and posted US$10,000 (€9,200) bail at the Knox County Jail early on Monday.

He was arrested him at his home in Camden in Maine at around 2am local time yesterday.

The 70-year-old singer-songwriter lives in Camden, Maine.

He is due to appear in Knox County Unified Court, Rockland, on February 22, according to the Wiscasset Newspaper.

McLean and his wife Patrisha are said to have two children.

His eight-minute hit "American Pie" was released in 1971 and reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts. Its six verses reflect U.S. social upheavals in the 1960s and early 1970s.

McLean's original manuscript and notes to American Pie sold at auction for 1.2 million dollars (£840,000) in April.
