Jonathan Creek, written by David Renwick, first aired in 1997 and stars Davies as the title character, a creative consultant to a stage magician who solves seemingly supernatural mysteries.

The new episode will be titled Daemons' Roost. Davies will be joined by Sarah Alexander as Jonathan's wife Polly, as well as actors including Warwick Davis, Emun Elliott and Ken Bones.

Fans can expect the "spookiest episode ever", QI star Davies said.

In BBC One's Daemons' Roost, viewers will meet veteran horror film director Nathan Clore, who lives in a house once occupied by a 19th century sorcerer who would summon the powers of hell to terrorise his victims.

Nathan wants to reveal the truth to his stepdaughter Alison and summons her to the house, but days before her arrival he is left paralysed by a debilitating stroke.

Jonathan is called upon to help uncover the truth - but as the story unfolds, the gruesome rituals that were once enacted in the dungeon of Daemons' Roost are frighteningly revived, with horrifying consequences.

Shane Allen, BBC Controller of comedy commissioning, said this was "another sublime and intricately conceived treat from David Renwick and a welcome return for Alan Davies in this signature role".

He added: "You can see the influence of David's unique blend of dark comedy and crime drama across television since the debut of this show nearly 20 years ago, as it remains a pioneering class act and evergreen favourite with the audience."
