Adele has revealed she sprouted a beard after getting pregnant, and lovingly nicknamed her facial fuzz ‘Larry’.

The Hello singer gave birth to son Angelo in 2012, and blamed hormones for the unexpected hair growth.

While performing in Glasgow, the 27-year-old told the sold-out crowd: “When I got pregnant I had so much testosterone in me that I grew a beard. I only cropped it last night. It’s actually true.

“I’m not telling a joke. I actually have a beard, but I’m not proud of it. I call it Larry.”

Many women develop facial hair and excess body hair during pregnancy due to the rise in levels of male sex hormones, called androgens, which increase the rate of hair growth.

Adele joked about 'Larry' while admiring beards she spotted on members of the audience, and mentioned her partner Simon Konecki’s matching facial hair.

“There are a lot of good beards here. My man’s got a good beard. He trims it sometimes in the summer. It really annoys me - but I do have a beard myself so I can understand when it gets hot.”

She also poked fun at reports claiming she was planning to take a five-year career break once her 106-date tour comes to end.

“Someone said I was taking five years off today, that’s ridiculous,” she said. “I’m taking 10!”

Off-stage, the singer tries to keep a low profile, and earlier on her tour, she confessed that the reason no one recognises her when she goes out in public is because she can’t do her own make-up and dresses “like a tramp”.

Although reportedly worth an estimated £60m (€76m), Adele said she is hopeless without her “glam squad” to style her make-up and hair.

“I can’t actually do my own hair and make-up, which is a First World problem. But the good thing about it is no one recognises me when I go to the shops or to the park because it doesn’t look like me.

“I look like a tramp most of the time which means I don’t need to go out in disguise. People think I’m a hermit but it’s just because no one recognises me when I go out.”
