Tired of feeling guilty and exhausted all the time, actress Ellen Page was motivated by "toxic" emotions to come out of the closet.

The 28-year-old Freeheld actress hid her homosexuality for years, but when her star began to rise in Hollywood following the exponential success of 2007 film Juno, after a while she could no longer tolerate carrying the weight of inauthenticity.

“I was just done," she told American Way magazine. "It’s so toxic to just be hiding; it becomes so consuming without you even knowing it’s consuming you.

"You become so complacent in this reality you create. It’s like a bucket, and it’s filling up and filling up and filling up — and finally it just spills over. And I felt guilty for not being out for the LGBT community.”

Ellen came out in a major way, as she went public about her homosexuality on 14 February 2014 during her speech at the Human Rights Campaign's Time to Thrive conference.

“I wanted to do it and not make it seem about myself," she explained of her decision to make the announcement at the event. "And I wanted to align particularly with something LGBT-youth-oriented.

"For me, it was a great opportunity to be honest, to share certain elements of the pain that I went through. Hopefully, that can connect with someone else.

"The reality is, there are very few young people out as actors, so I was hoping to speak to a lot of the issues so it wouldn’t just seem like, ‘Hey, look, I’m gay.’”

Since coming out, Ellen has made several strides, and in September at the Toronto International Film Festival, she made her red carpet debut with girlfriend Samantha Thomas, a surfer and artist, during the world premiere of her movie Freeheld.

"Walking down the carpet holding my girlfriend's hand is pretty special, it's pretty awesome," she told E! News of the pivotal moment. "I'm in love."
