A look back at Prince's colourful love life.
Prince discovered Carmen in the early '90s, famously changing her name from Tara Leigh Patrick to Carmen Electra and a star was born. They famously dated, although it's unclear for how long, with Carmen crediting her former mentor with her career.
She paid tribute to him on Thursday night in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, saying: "The world has lost a truly incredible spirit and musical genius. What a blessing it is to be one of the chosen ones who had the chance to work so closely with him," said Electra, who was also romantically involved with Prince. "He gave me my name, he believed in me, and he has inspired an entire generation. I will always love him."
Apollonia played his love interest in Purple Rain and romance also translated off set. She previously described him as her "greatest friend", saying: “We were, and still are, platonically, romantically involved."
Former Twin Peaks actress Sherilyn dated the iconic singer briefly in the early '90s and today, she paid tribute to her former lover. "Prince inspired me. He changed my life," she told HollywoodLife.com. "I will miss him greatly. There will only ever be one Prince."
On the cusp of Hollywood superstardom, Kim Basinger dated Prince in 1989 when she starred in Batman and he worked on the soundstrack.
Basinger, who went on to marry Alec Baldwin, said she has "great memories" of their relationship in an interview with the Daily Beast.
"It was a really special moment in time, and I have great memories," she said. "I don’t put a lot of restrictions on myself, let’s just put it that way. If there’s someone I connect with, we’ll go on these rides together. So that was a neat time in my life."
Prince was rumoured to have written The Most Beautiful Girl in The World for actress Vanessa who featured in the video for the 1995 hit.
Prince's first wife Mayte, with whom he had a son Boy Gregory who died a week after his birth, said today to PEOPLE: "I can't even think of the words of what I'm feeling. This man was my everything, we had a family. I am beyond deeply saddened and devastated. I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now." The pair were married from 1996 to 1998 before their union was annuled.
Prince wed once more to Manuela, after meeting through work for his charity, in 2001 and she ended the marriage in 2005. He made no secret of his heartbreak at their split after. When asked by Radar Online how she was coping with news of his death, she said: "I'm not okay."
Prince dated Vanity in the late '80s when she featured in the group Vanity 6. She tragically died in February of this year from renal failure due to severe drug use in the early days of her career. The couple parted ways as Vanity, real name Denise Matthews, developed a crack cocaine habit.
Drummer Sheila E. first met Prince in the late '80s when she was a drummer for his band. "The meaning of the word loss has taken on a new meaning this day," she told PEOPLE. "Thank God love lives forever." They stayed close friends ever since, still performing together in recent years.
These days she's a world famous ballerina, but it was Prince who gave Misty her big break in 2009 when he called her out of the blue to cast her in his video for Crimson and Clover and changing her life forever. She went on to become the first African-American principal dancer in the American Ballet Theatre but reports of a romance were shot down as she was dating now-fiance Olu Evans.
