Pop princesses of the noughties: Where are they now?

What are Ashanti, Jessica Simpson and Mandy Moore up to these days?
It’s Britney, b***h. Always has, always will be. She was the original princess of pop (in the late ‘90s anyway) and we never looked at a Catholic school uniform the same after Baby One More Time. These days, she’s performing nearly every night with her Las Vegas residency and has two sons Jayden James (nine) and Sean (10). And we don’t discuss 2007.
In the late nineties/early noughties, Jessica’s virginal image set her apart from the rest of the blonde bombshells vying for the queen of pop crown. She enjoyed a moderately successful music career and she soon dabbled in acting, starred in MTV reality show Newlyweds with ex-husband Nick Lachey; but now it’s her lifestyle brand that has made her a tour de force. She’s married to former NFL player Eric Johnson and has two children Maxwell (three) and Ace Knute (two). And her company made over $1bn last year.
In 1999, a then 16-year-old Mandy Moore was pretty as a picture, sweet as Candy and the last to join the seemingly endless influx of pretty blonde singers aiming to take Britney’s queen of pop crown. Her debut album So Real went platinum, but only reached 31 in the Billboard 200 charts. She has since made her mark in acting – forever holding a place in our teenage hearts for her role as Jamie Sullivan in A Walk to Remember. She is now a successful actress and married to musician Ryan Adams.
She was hailed as Britney’s great rival in 1999 when she burst onto the scene with Genie in a Bottle. And shocked all of us (just a 13-year-old me?) when she took home the Best New Artist Grammy the following year. After a successful singing career, including a metamorphosis into a ‘Dirrty’ diva in 2002 and then a few more transformations to keep it fresh; she’s currently a mentor on the US version of The Voice. She is married to Matthew Rutler and has two children Max Bratman (seven) with ex-husband Jordan and daughter Summer Rain (one).
Somebody hit the lights – Christina Milian hasn’t aged a day since 2001 when she released AM to PM. The impossibly catchy tune catapulted her to stardom, but she has yet to reach the same levels of fame in recent years. Most recently, she features on E! reality show Turned Up, documenting her return to the spotlight. She has a daughter Violet Madison (five) with ex-husband The Dream and is currently dating rapper Lil Wayne.
Pink provided a punk alternative to the sweet as pie singers du jour in the early noughties. In 2001, M!ssundaztood featured hits like Just Like a Pill and Don’t Let Me Get Me, followed up by a string of successful albums. She has sold over 136 million albums, has three Grammys and was awarded Billboard’s Woman of the Year in 2013. She has a daughter Willow (four) with husband, Carey Hart.
2000 was Mya’s year. She released top 10 hit Case of the Ex, shot to fame and featured alongside Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim and Pink in Lady Marmalade to accompany the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. She is still singing, albeit to much smaller audiences – earlier this year, she promoted her new single in a strip club. By pole dancing.
She released her self-titled album in 2002 with hits like Foolish and Happy tearing up the charts at the time. Not to mention, she was dating rapper Nelly which saw her name in the headlines after her popular in music waned. She has landed guest starring roles on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in recent years and last year, she released a successful Christmas album.
