Following Matt Damon’s recent revelation that it was ‘painful’ being Ben Affleck’s friend during the actor’s 2003 relationship with Jennifer Lopez, we’ve decided to take a look back at some of that year’s hottest celebrity couples and celebrate 2003 as pop culture’s most seminal year.

  • Go To

1. Glenda Gilson and Brian O’Driscoll

He was Ireland’s most sought-after rugby player and she was the country’s most in demand model and together, GG and BOD were Ireland’s answer to Posh ‘n’ Becks. The former IT couple exploded onto the Irish showbiz scene in 2003 when Brian accompanied Glenda to Wicklow where she was judging The Face of Bray competition, before ending their tryst in 2005.

2. Britney Spears and Colin Farrell

Back when he was Hollywood’s biggest bad boy and she was quickly becoming an LA party girl, Colin and Britney allegedly enjoyed a brief fling in 2003 after she accompanied him to the premiere of his movie, The Recruit.

3. Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson

Nick and Jessica were Hollywood royalty back in 2003 as they began filming their hugely successful reality TV series, Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. Long before the Kardashians were dominating reality TV, the newly married couple allowed cameras into their home for a no-holds-barred look into their marriage. However, like all great Hollywood marriages, the pair called time on their relationship in 2005.

4. David and Victoria Beckham

Perhaps one of the few couples that haven’t found themselves victim to stardom’s scarily short marriage lifespan is golden couple David and Victoria Beckham. Back in 2003, David and Victoria were the hottest thing since sliced pan (and still are, obvs) as they began filming their Real Beckhams documentary, showcasing David’s transfer from Manchester United to Real Madrid. Victoria was gearing up to release new music in collaboration with Damon Dash (whom she would also go on to work with on his Rock ‘n’ Republic denim brand); David received his OBE and the couple enjoyed a promotional tour of Japan, ensuring that Brand Beckham became a global force to be reckoned with.

5. Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy

After meeting on the set of their 2003 movie, Just Married, Kutcher enjoyed a brief romance with the late actress and the pair fuelled engagement rumours by wearing matching rings in public. Their relationship was given extensive screen time in Lifetime’s 2014 biopic, The Brittany Murphy Story.

6. Keira Knightley and Jamie Dornan

Back in 2003, Jamie Dornan was pre-50 Shades of Grey and Keira’s career was just kicking off thanks to Pirates of the Caribbean. The pair met in ’03 on the set of an Asprey jewellery campaign, when Jamie was working primarily as a model and Keira was the star attraction. Their two-year relationship defined all that was hilarious about noughties fashion as they donned matching low-rise baggy jeans, crop tops with a hint of a knicker line (Keira, not Jamie) and generally anything ill-fitting they could get their hands on. Ah, it was a simpler time.

7. Kirsten Dunst and Jake Gyllenhaal

Kirsten and Jake enjoyed a pretty serious two year relationship from ’02-’04, moving into a mansion in the Hollywood Hills together and even sharing a dog named Atticus. After being introduced through Jake’s sister, Maggie, the pair appeared in the throes of love in 2003, regularly spotted on dinner dates, romantic strolls and attending awards ceremonies, but alas, it wasn’t to be.

Bonus picture - This is what they wore to the Met Gala that year:

8. Sandra Bullock and Ryan Gosling

Like all great (doomed) Hollywood relationships, Sandra and Ryan met on the set of a movie they were both working on – Murder by Numbers. The pair caused a stir with their 16-year age gap, but that didn’t stop their extravagant and incessant public displays of affection whenever a camera was around. The relationship ended after a year.

9. Paris Hilton and Nick Carter

The hotel heiress and former Backstreet Boy shared what can only be described as tumultuous year-long relationship in 2003. Their time together was dogged by rumours of infidelity as Paris was alleged to have been cheating on Nick with Chad Michael Murray and Carter himself was accused of supposedly having an affair with Ashlee Simpson.

10. Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin

Before they consciously uncoupled in 2014, Gywneth and Chris appeared to be the poster couple for a successful Hollywood marriage. After meeting in late 2002, the pair wed on December 5 2003 and both their careers began soared. When the couple went their separate ways last year, they were widely mocked for their use of the term ‘conscious uncoupling’ but unlike other Hollywood exes, Gwyneth and Chris have remained good friends.
