Beauty expert and future Bridezilla Triona McCarthy has all the latest tricks of the trade and top product recommendations to keep you looking hot, for all the right reasons
Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to prevent the transformation of Triona McCarthy into a stressed-out, crazy, card-carrying Bridezilla.
Saying yes was the easy part. I never thought I’d have to plan the bloody thing!
For richer or poorer, I suggest the following make-up routine. Always use a face primer with your foundation to help make-up cling to skin that little bit longer.
Glominerals gloFace primer, €28.75, is a clear gel that fills in fine lines and imperfections. For sheer coverage, I mix this primer into my foundation.
Revlon’s PhotoReady Foundation, €19, is designed for camera close-ups, and is a firm favourite with brides. Clarins Everlasting Foundation SPF15, €29, is another stay-all-day product.
Dust some loose powder over foundation to lock in moisture and set it for the day.
Choose a cream blush like Illamasqua’s, €20, rather than powder as it will make your complexion look natural and soft.
ARTDECO’s Eyeshadow Base, €9.45, right, is a creamy base that neutralises the colour of the eyelids and stops make-up creasing.
Try Lancome Hypnose Drama Waterproof Mascara, €25.40, for big, fat, dramatic lashes that will stay put.
For lips, Estee Lauder Double Wear Lipstick, €23, left, gives great colour, stayingpower and lip definition.
Wash and go
If you’re used to performance hair products at home, the free hotel shampoo and conditioner probably won’t cut it on your hollipops.
So if you’re off on summer holidays, or a long-weekend getaway — try the John Frieda Travel Pack range.
Available in both the Brilliant Brunette and Sheer Blonde varieties, all products come in a dinky 50ml size, taking the stress out of holiday packing this summer, and ideal for jet-setters to take onboard in their hand luggage. Both packs contain a mini shampoo and conditioner.
To style, the brunette pack, above, includes the Brilliant Brunette Shine Shock High Protecting Glosser, perfect for calming flyaways and softly separating layers, fringes and wispy ends, while the Sheer Blonde travel pack contains a Sheer Blonde Crystal Hold
Hairspray. Both packs are €6.89 and come in a stylish transparent travel bag.
Making the cut
I’ve been following John Maher and Leonard Daly round for years.
Back in the day when I worked in the area, I would always have my hair done in Toni&Guy in Blackrock.
Then, along with Zara Cox, they opened Queen in Aungier Street in Dublin, and I was ‘in there like swimwear’.
John, who cuts my hair like no other, has now opened in his home town of Thurles in Tipp. So if you live down that direction and want to see what I’m talking about, then book in with John. He’s always there on a Wednesday, or try senior stylist Rachel Smith on a Friday.
Make sure you try the Coppola Keratin Complex Vanilla Bean Deep Conditioner treatment, €32 — it’s really effective, leaving hair smoother and softer.
You’ll be Q-ing up for their services!

Appara Nichola Joss, celebrity facialist to the stars, who has worked with the likes of Elle Macpherson, Kate Moss and Claudia Schiffer, encourages each of her celebrity clients to use the innovative Slendertone Face, €300, in between their treatments with her to ensure a longer-lasting youthful radiance.
Hmmm, so that’s how they do it!
“I encourage clients to use it for just 20 minutes, five times a week, to enhance radiance to the skin and keep facial muscles sculptured.
“It is a great product that they can use at home after they have been to me,” she says.

“The word of the day is ‘legs’.
Let’s go back to my place and spread the word!”
A guy actually said that to me, to chat me up — a long, looooooong time ago now . . . before I became all growed up, oh, and engaged!
I remember those days when I was all single, all dancing. I used to cover myself in Rimmel Sunshimmer Mousse, €11.45, which really is the best quick tan ever and perfect for last-minute nights out when you haven’t tanned properly!
The only thing I don’t like is that it can make you look like you have some sort of skin disease, as it blotches if any water gets near it.
A drag-queen friend of mine told me he/she sprays hairspray over it, making sure to let it dry, so you can dance the night away and it won’t budge!
I’m always doing the wrong thing, like laughing when somebody falls over or making inappropriate comments.
When it comes to perfume, what is it that makes me want to rub my wrists together after I spray? And I do it even though I know I’m not supposed to, as the friction spoils the fragrance, making it fade faster.
So in future — no more wrist action! Hahahahaha!
