True beauty: The biggest myths about make-up

The world of beauty comes complete with its share of legends, myths and old wives' tales.
We've all heard horror stories about a product that turned someone's skin green, and miracle cures that made freckles magically disappear.
Which legends are to be believed, and which should we take with a pinch of salt?
Renowned Irish make-up artist Ken Boylan (www.kenboylan.com) shares his wisdom and tells us straight -- are these myths fact or fiction?
MYTH: YOU SHOULD NEVER ‘PUMP’ THE MASCARA WAND IN AND OUT OF THE TUBE
“This one is true. Pumping your mascara wand will dry out your mascara really quickly. Also, the bigger the brush, the shorter the time your mascara will work for you. The smaller the brush, the longer it will last because you are not letting as much air into the tube.” So, no more pumping. If you feel you’re not coating the brush enough, try swirling the wand around inside the tube instead. La Roche-Posay Respectissime Densifying Mascara, €17, exclusively from pharmacies.
MYTH: HIGHLIGHTERS AND CONCEALERS ARE INTERCHANGEABLE
Definitely false. I know people who use highlighters to brighten dark circles. Ken explains: “Highlighters are NOT concealers. Highlighters add a glow to your skin, give a soft, flattering shine and heighten your bone. “Concealers are like heavier foundation and are designed to cover darkness, redness under the eyes and spots on the face. If you use a highlighter as a concealer, it would highlight the flaws.” Catrice All Round Concealer, €3.79, Penneys, selected Dunnes stores, Heatons and pharmacies nationwide.
MYTH: BLACK EYELINER MAKES YOUR EYES LOOK BIGGER
This one is false. Your eyes don’t look any bigger when lined inside the lid. But, as Ken tells us, that’s not always a bad thing. “Black eyeliner, when used over the eyelid, will help to make the eye look bigger as it adds length to your lashes. “Black eye pencil in the inner rim of the eye can sometimes make your eyes look smaller if you haven’t made up the rest of your eye. But lining your inner eye with black liner can be a great look for night time — it will make the white of your eyes look really bright.” Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner, €22, Bobbi Brown counters in Brown Thomas.
MYTH: THE MORE EXPENSIVE THE PRODUCT, THE BETTER
We’ve all felt jealous of the model who slathers on €200 wonder cream. But realistically, does price matter that much? “There are some great products out there from every brand, be it a luxury one or a budget one. There is no one ‘good’ make-up or skincare brand. The trick is to try the products on your own skin before buying to see if they work for you. Something cheap and cheerful might be perfect for your skin type.” Garnier Body Intensive 7 Days Moisturiser, €7.69 for 400ml, department stores and pharmacies nationwide.
