Triona's Trends: Gorgeous hands
Published 23/08/2011 | 15:28
We’ve got it nailed this week as our beauty expert Triona McCarthy reveals the latest trends in making your hands gorgeous. Plus some tips and hints on how to use the products perfectly.
I always say a new lip or tip colour is a really inexpensive way of updating your look. The big nail trends this new season are metallics and muted shades. Chanel nearly always dictate what we’ll be dipping our digits in. Their new colours include Graphite: a metallic, glittery, blackened silver; Quartz, a sparkly, smoky taupe, and Peridot, an antiqued golden bronze, all €21. In my picture, above, I’m rocking Nubar’s Moire colour, below, €10 — it’s the perfect transitional colour.
For total hipsters, check out Inglot Crazy Nails, above right, €13. Appara, Katy Perry is a big fan of this graffiti-style nail effect. Apply it evenly over a coat of your favourite nail enamel to get the effect. A thin layer will give you narrow cracks, while a thick layer creates wide cracks.
So, that’s nail colours sorted; here’s how to paint ‘em. Before you do anything, get organised. If you’re off out soon, make sure that you’ve gone to the loo, your shoes are on and that you have your keys, money and phone out of your handbag.
Wash your hands, then take a cotton ball soaked in nail-polish remover to remove any residue. Always use a base coat. Then there’s the tricky bit: painting them. I use the three-stroke method. Do one stroke from the base of the nail to the tip, following along the centre of the nail, and then go around the base and up each side. And apply two thin coats of polish rather than one thick one.
I’m a dreadful sleeper. I normally get four hours, tops.
But sleep is sooo important. Our skin is hard at work while we sleep.
The skin’s metabolic rate is highest at night and, as a consequence, more free radicals are produced.
The skin’s temperature also rises at night, which means the skin loses more moisture. Origins High-Potency Night-A-Mins Mineral-enriched renewal cream, right, €42 — it also comes in an oil-free version — is a must to take advantage of our skin’s night workout.
It’s like your skin’s daily dose of vitamins, minerals and moisture. My skin always feels brighter and it looks better when I use this
I’m obsessed with stars. I recently bought a star-print jacket from Zara that I love, my PJs have stars on them and even my loo paper from Marks & Spencer is a funky star print. It’s, um, out of this world. Budget beauty range Catrice have a new limited-edition range called Out of Space in the shops until September and, of course, I’m McLovin it.
I particularly like the Gel Eyeliner, €4.49. C01 Empire Behind The Sun, below left, is a great colour coming into the new season where blue is the new black.
The funky range features an array of blues and futuristic gold and silver colours, all of which are really long-lasting. you can’t have a gel eyeliner without a brush — they’re as inseparable as Venus and Mars. Catrice’s professional brush, €2.99, which has two different ends, is ideal for applying creamy textures like their Gel Eyeliner accurately. So, would you prefer a subtle or a dramatic finish today?
I’m addicted to all things miniature and cute — except where my boyfriend, Will, is concerned, of course. Then size matters!
For the tanimals out there who can’t bear to be without their products for a whole festival weekend, the new He-Shi Discovery Kit, below right, €21.75, is perfect for packing in your backpack.
It contains three small He-Shi products in 50ml sizes: the He-Shi Exfoliating Bodywash to help prepare the skin before you go, the He-Shi Express Liquid Tan, as well as the He-Shi Day to Day Gradual Tan.
For perfect application, the He-Shi Miniature Tanning Mitt is also included, so there’s no excuse not to be a bronzed beauty while bopping to those beats. He-Shi products are available from selected department stores, salons and day spas. For your nearest He-Shi stockist, contact Euro Products, tel: (048) 9044-9744, or see www.euro-products.co.uk
Lee Mildon said: “People seldom notice old clothes if you wear a big smile.”
I love that!
Seriously though, it’s much easier to smile than it is to frown. A smile uses 17 muscles, a frown, 43. But remember to floss regularly, because your gums are full of oxygen-carrying blood vessels that transport toxins and bacteria from plaque if it’s not removed.
I’m gonna get electrified once again at this year’s Electric Picnic at Stradbally, Co Laois in two weeks’ time.
There is mucho mud, men, models, make-up, madness and mayhem. Just the way I like it. At the Picnic, I also always pop into the Pamper Palace on site where hairdressers and make-up artists from top salons across the country can transform you from festival fried to festival fit, just like Alexa Chung, left. Hair styling, GHD rental, make-up, lashes, face jewels, body and face, airbrushing, nails — you name it, the Pamper Palace do it.
Find their salons in both the Boutique Campsite and the Jimi Hendrix Campsite. Make appointments now, as they get booked up fast. The Pamper Palace, tel: (086) 871-9888, email thepamperpalace.ep @gmail.com, or see Facebook/The Pamper Palace
