Triona McCarthy: Ponytale

She’s back in the saddle again, and our beauty expert Triona McCarthy has some horse sense to impart when it comes to creating the perfect ponytail

Triona's trends: Giddy up, gals, we’re all about ponies this week: ponytails, that is. They’re so effortlessly chic and a real classic, so it’s worth learning how to do a really good one.

  • Go To

My ponytail in this week’s picture was created by hair maestro Kelly Smith from Dylan Bradshaw. I opted for a sleek, curled-at-the-end version with a side fringe. I won’t insult your hair know-how by over-explaining the pony process, but for those of you who like details, read on.

First, wash your hair with Shu Uemura Muroto Volume Amplifying Shampoo, right, €30, and lightly towel dry it to remove any excess moisture. Then apply a volumising conditioner like Shu Uemura Muroto Volume Amplifying Conditioner, above right, €40, and work it through to the ends.

For a polished ponytail, use Shu Uemura’s Tasai Cream, €30. According to Kelly, it’s the star product in the Art of Hair collection. It adds both body and movement in straighter, smoother styles, yet it’s perfect for defining curls and adding texture. Then just smooth the hair into a ponytail with the fantastic — and well worth investing in — Shu Uemura paddle brush, €41. Secure with a hair bungee, and wrap a small piece of hair from the ponytail around the bungee to conceal it.

Then, use a curling tongs to curl the end section. Finally, a spritz of L’Oreal Professionnel Tecni.Art Crystal Gloss, right, €16, which will give your hair an ultra-shiny finish.

Triona's tricks

Did you get a manicure kit for Christmas? So, what’s what? Nail clipper: shortens nails. Nail file: gets rid of rough edges. Buffer: smoothes out the nail and creates a sheen, just like a shoeshine for nails. Cuticle pusher: best used after a shower to carefully push back the cuticles. Cuticle nippers: trims off the tops of excess cuticle skin. Now isn’t that handy to know?

Cold cream

Brrrrrr! Baby, it’s cold outside! No snowball jokes from me today — I’m being a lady. Anyhoo, the winter months can play havoc with your skin. Low humidity caused by central heating and less fresh air can leave your skin dry and flaky. But help is at hand from those clever clogs at Neutrogena who have developed a moisturiser range which contains an active ingredient clinically proven to penetrate 10 layers’ deep into the skin.

The Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Deep Moisture body range is also proven to moisturise for 24 hours after just one application. With its fresh fragrance, this non-greasy, fast-absorbing formula melts into the skin so there is no need to wait to get dressed.

The range includes two fast absorbing body lotions, €5.49, with an easy-to-use pump application, and Comfort Balm, above, €6.57, for the body and face, which has a velvety texture. Top tip: apply your moisturiser after you’ve dried your hair in the morning, as the heat from your hairdryer will lessen the moisturising effect.

I should Coco

I’ve just watched — again — the Coco Avant Chanel film with Audrey Tautou, right, playing the part of Gabrielle, aka Coco, and I’m feeling all ladylike now. “The accessory is what makes or breaks a woman,” said Gabrielle Chanel. “It is essential — the finishing touch that gives a woman her allure, her style. It’s that little something that makes all the difference.”

This art of accessorising, combined with the desire of every woman to always have her essentials close to hand, inspired Chanel to create three “purse jewels” based around N°5, the iconic Chanel fragrance.

The set of three 20ml purse sprays is now available in all three concentrations: Eau de Parfum and Eau Premiere, €89.50, and Eau de Toilette, €71.

Very handy for glam-on-the-go or if you’re flying — as you won’t need to decant your favourite fragrance.

Cult product

I love having perfectly painted nails, but I can never find the time to sit around and watch nail polish dry. Then I discovered New York Color In A New York Color Minute nail polish, in Spring Street, right, €3.48, a vivid bright orange and my top pick for the new season.

This range goes from wet to set in less than a minute. The mineral-enriched formula also helps resist chipping and fading, so your mani not only takes less time, it lasts longer, too.

The special brush dispenses just the right amount of colour for a perfect application, even if you need to apply it tearing across town. The NYC New York Color range is available nationwide.
