Triona McCarthy: Desk to diva
With the party season upon us, Triona McCarthy has all the tricks for turning your daytime look into a more dramatic evening look with minimum hassle, and she’s also got a tale that’s sure to make your hair curl
Triona's trends: How do you turn daytime make-up into night-time make-up? You know the feeling. You’ve had a long day, and now you’ve got to turn it around and turn him on — so turn it up with my essential desk-to-diva demo.
Luckily, I’m known as Party McCarthy, due to the fact that I can help you get from desk to dazzling in no time. I always keep a lil bag of essentials handy for on-the-go glamour.
Right now, I have them in this M&S cute cosmetic bag, below left, €4.75, which is all glittery and girlie for Christmas Tree-na. The first essential is a powder compact, and you can’t beat Mac Studio Fix all-in-one powder foundation, €34. This is a great, on-the-go, miracle product, and I’m not sure what I'd do without it. It can be used as a powder to mattify or freshen the face, and also as a concealer to hide spots and dark circles. No matter how hot things get, there’s no melted make-up with this. Next up is a highlighter, as you need something shimmery to sparkle like the fairy lights.
Reach for the No 7 MirrorBall Highlighter Compact, €17.75. Apply to shoulders, collarbones and the high points of the face. It’s so buildable — you can either go for a subtle shine or full on-glitter. Don’t forget to dab a little on your decolletage, you diva!
Do you ever use those free shower caps you get in hotels? No?
Well, think again. I find they are perfect when packing my suitcase, as I put my shoes in them to protect them from dirtying my clothes. They’re also handy for popping over your shoes to protect them from the rain — daft as they look, you’ll be glad when you’re inside.
I miss Trish
“If ever there is tomorrow when we’re not together . . . there is something you must always remember. “You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. “But the most important thing is, even if we’re apart. “I’ll always be with you.”
I printed this Winnie-the-Pooh quote on my page this time last year for my lil sis’, Tricia, to see. Tricia, at this stage, was very, very ill having endured a few rounds of chemo and radiation, but surprised us all by mustering the energy to go on a short trip to Prague with her boyfriend, Tim.
Her determination knocked down every obstacle in her way. Two months later, she was dead. Now here come the tears, but it’s OK — I’ve got my Institut Esthederm Repair System Eye Contour, below, €55 for 10 patches. This intensive treatment works instantly to lift and repair the delicate eye area.
Before I lay me down to sleep, I pray for a man who is not a creep. One who’s handsome, smart and strong, one who loves to listen long, One who thinks before he speaks, When he says he’ll call, he won’t wait weeks. I pray that he is well employed, When I spend his cash, won’t be annoyed.
Pulls out my chair and opens my door, Massages my back and begs to do more. Send me a man who’ll make love to my mind, Knows what to answer to “How big is my behind?” I pray that this man will love me no end, and never attempt to hit on my friend. And, as I kneel and pray by my bed, I look at the creep you sent me instead. Amen.
Curly hair, like men, can be difficult to manage. Bumble & bumble Curl Conscious Reactivating Mist, €24.50, puts the life back into your curls, and prevents frizz when you don’t have time to wash your hair: just spray on and style your curls. I pray for a spray for badly behaved boyfriends.
I met Mick Jagger’s missus, fashion designer, stylist and former model L’Wren Scott, when she launched her Christmas 2010 collection for Lancome, which was developed with Lancome artistic make-up director Aaron De May. I really want to be her, and love her ladylike vibe as well as her range of dresses.
Make like L’Wren with the Ombre Absolue Palette Quad in Les Gris L’Wren, €45, for smokey eyes, while L’Absolu Rouge in Rouge L’Wren, €25, is a lippie in L’Wren’s signature burgundy. But the stand-out product for me is the nail polish, Le Vernis in Le Gris L’Wren, right, €16, which was designed exclusively for her autumn/winter runway. Can’t afford the dresses, but my digits are dipped in a designer colour. Rock on!
