Triona McCarthy: Cry day 13th
Valentine’s Day is a-coming. Ooh, the sexcitement of it! Our very own sweetheart, Triona McCarthy, has the lowdown on looking good for the day that’s in it

Triona's trends: All the single ladies, put your hands up! Yes, it’s Cryday the 13th; the day before Valentine’s Day when you’re feeling awfully sorry for yourself because you don’t have a boyfriend.
Well, if you’re in the middle of a he-tox, just remember, “it’s better to be on the shelf than in the wrong cupboard.” Most men tell me they don’t like the smoky eyes and bold red lips look I love!
Apparently, it’s just a little overwhelming. So instead, I’m gonna focus on playing up my cheeks. Cheeky! Use a big brush and a light hand. Put the blush on your brush, tapping off any excess, or put a dab of cream on your fingers. Look into the mirror and smile to find the apples of your cheeks.
Keep the colour light and blended. If you’re using a gel or cream blush, dab it on with your middle finger, and blend it with your ring finger. I’m McLovin Mac’s limited-edition Wonder Woman Blush Duo in Mighty Aphrodite, €27. Now try a sexy pink on your lips. The Rouge d’Armani lip shades from Giorgio Armani mirror the fresh, luminescent spring colour stories rocking the runways. Petal Pink, Dawn Pink, Early Morning Rose, €26 each, are to die for. Finish off with L’Occitane’s 3 Piece Rose Fragrance Collection, £34, available on www.qvcuk.com, item number 222100. Looking good, girlfriends!
Make yourself beautifood with leftover Valentine’s chocolates by making a yummy body polish. Mix together two cups of Epsom salts or sugar and ¼ cup of Vaseline. Add one spoon of cocoa powder or melted chocolate and mix well.
Use the mixture to gently scrub away dry skin patches. Rinse in the shower with warm water. Mmmm!
Get up and glow
My skin looks like corned beef after a winter wrapped round a radiator! I’m not much of a tanimal, but my body does look better bronzed. Prepare your skin with the strawberry-scented He-Shi Exfoliating Bodywash, €14, before applying the He-Shi Souffle Moisturiser, €16, and you’re ready to apply your tan.
The range also has He-Shi Day to Day Gradual Tan, €18.50, to build up a colour more naturally, or He-Shi One Day Tan, €18.50, perfect for a Valentine’s night colour boost, or the He-Shi Liquid Express Tan, €26, ideal for a romantic weekend. For a warming glow on your face, the He-Shi Multi-Fusion Bronzer, €20, will do the trick nicely.

If, like Katy Perry, you nailed yourself a man and a ring and you really want to show off, then check out the new nail collection that Katy has produced with nail lacquer experts OPI. There are four colours in the collection reflecting her love of street style: Teenage Dream — a dreamy pink colour that sparkles and shines; Not Like the Movies — a cool, metallic silver; Last Friday Night — this season’s blue, as seen at Vivienne Westwood’s catwalk show; and The One that Got Away — a hot colour-pop.
Each colour can be worn on its own or layered with the Shatter Black top-coat formula, which creates a ground-breaking cracked pattern when worn over the dried, bright layer. The Katy Perry for Opi range costs €12.95 for each full-sized polish and a pack of four mini-sizes costs €16.95. OPI is available at Sam McCauley and Unicare pharmacies nationwide, as well from other leading pharmacies nationwide.
My knight in shining armour? Turns out it was tinfoil! My Mr Right is right around the corner, and things are looking brighter, especially since I’ve got my pedicured paws on Benefit’s Finding Mr Bright, €39.50. It contains their shimmering Girl Meets Pearl primer, as well as High Beam highlighter, Posie Tint cheek stain, and even a pot of their Erase Paste concealer! It has everything you need to get brighter skin and a brighter future as you glow your way through the dating scene.
Because sometimes finding Mr Right is worth the wait. You glow, girls!
Triona's most wanted
“Black is the colour of my true love’s hair, Her lips are like some roses fair, She has the sweetest smile, the gentlest hands, And I love the ground whereon she stands.” I first heard this song when a gorgeous guy called John sang it while playing the piano on a cruise. I heard it again in Pink Beauty, Anita Murray’s second salon in the wake of the continued success of Pink Beauty Boutique in Dundrum Village.
Pink Beauty Emporium’s day spa is hidden away on the fourth floor of the Dundrum Town Centre. Anita offers the Rose Petal Champagne Manicure, the Moroccan Rose Oil Luxury Champagne Pedicure, and has a lash and brow boutique where she will instantly lift and take years off your facial features.
The lovely music is courtesy of DJ and therapist Diane, and it’s much better than all that windchime . . . (it rhymes with kite!) So, when you’re feeling blue, go to Pink is what I think!
