Each week Independent Woman investigates what's new and cutting edge in the battle to remain young and beautiful. This week, dazzled by the red carpet and envious of those Hollywood smiles, we went under the light to sample Zoom - the latest teeth-whitening treatment.

What is it?

A 45-minute teeth-whitening treatment administered by a dentist. The treatment uses a light-activated bleach which can whiten teeth by up to eight shades. Moulds are also made for home whitening allowing you to top up the gleam factor in the comfort of your own home!

What's the process?

Rubber moulds are made of your dental profile before a consultation takes place. After you've decided on which shade works best with the aid of some nifty colour matching, you and your soon-to-be-new gnashers are placed in a chair before lasers get to work on your pearly whites.

As the bleach in the whitening gel can burn gums and damage the skin inside the mouth, a protective gel is administered to prevent burning around the teeth before the whitening gel is painted onto the tooth enamel. New whitening gel is applied every 15 minutes helping to break up stains and whiten teeth.

Sounds a bit surgical?

The teeth-whitening gel is packed with Hydrogen Peroxide which is triggered into activity using a special light. The bleach and light used as a combination speeds up the breakdown of stains and discolouration on the tooth enamel. As the whole thing is administered by a dental surgeon the risks are minimised.

What are the benefits?

A brighter, whiter smile. As teeth can be lightened by up to eight shades in just 45 minutes, the results do have something of a wow factor about them. Rather than the dentist's chair, the whole thing takes place in a leather recliner while you can relax with a DVD of your choice.

And what did you choose?

Not Jaws!

How long does it take?

Including an inspection and consultation my Zoom teeth whitening took an hour.

The best bit?

Although it's recommended that your new teeth match the whites of your eyes, I went the whole hog and got the full on Simon Cowell. Back at the office it was time for colleagues to don sunglasses as I pinged my pearly whites at every available opportunity.

Any downsides?

It is a little painful. Although the treatment itself was relatively easy, my teeth were quite sensitive for a couple of days afterwards.

As the treatment also leaves teeth susceptible to staining in the immediate period after treatment, menu planning is a must and curries or foods and drinks which are likely to stain the teeth are a definite no-no. Filling myself with ice cream, oven chips and mayonnaise gave me an excuse to break the diet for a few days!

How much is it?

Zoom teeth whitening costs €495 and is available at the Seapoint Dental Clinic, Blackrock, County Dublin. To book a treatment, call 01 284 2570 or see seapointclinic.ie for more details.
