Each week Independent Woman investigates what's new and cutting edge in the battle to remain young and beautiful. This week we sample the delights of the Shu Uemura Kara hair ceremony and blow dry. An hour and a half of massage, hair conditioning and pampering said to nourish the soul as well as the roots.

What is it?

A luxury salon treatment designed to soothe the mind, the body, the soul and the ... hair! Part massage and part blow dry, the scalp is stroked, the neck is kneaded and the thirsts of your tresses are quenched with a shampoo and conditioning treatment which is customised to your exact requirements. As if this weren't enough, the crown is crowned with a bespoke blow dry.

What's the process?

The treatment begins with a deeply indulgent shiatsu-inspired massage which focuses on the scalp, neck, back, arms and hands. Once knots have been kneaded and tensions released, it's time to gently float away with the aid of a vibrating massage chair whilst hair is treated to a Shu Uemura prescriptive shampoo. After conditioning, a deeply nourishing hair mask is applied and a sleep-inducing pressure point massage is administered before your finished off with a blow dry.

What are the benefits?

The scalp massage uses a Shu Uemura clarifying cleansing oil to purify the hair and balance the condition of the scalp while the Shu Uemura Moisture Velvet shampoo, conditioner and hair mask are infused with rich camellia oil to quench thirsty locks, condition hair fibres and leave hair smooth, supple and perfectly conditioned.

Who's it for?

Anyone looking to give their tired tresses a bit of an MOT. As the treatment is completely bespoke, a specially trained stylist will discuss the best product for your hair needs beforehand. In my own particular case, overdoing things with the straighteners called for some deep moisture treatment. I am also assured most hair quibbles can be catered for!

How long does it take?

Including consultation and blow dry, about an hour and a half.

The best bit?

Leaving the salon feeling like a princess and having your locks looking like a million dollars. Contrary to normal deep conditioning protocol, at no point do you have to slip out of the back of the salon with your hair slicked back and under wraps. Being treated to a curly blow dry after such a sleep-inducing massage makes the treatment the most decadent lunchtime treat imaginable.

Any downsides?

Falling asleep. The treatment is so relaxing it should come with a health warning. After just 10 minutes in the chair I found myself drooling on my shoulder and walking round for the rest of the day in a massage induced haze. When it comes to relaxation, this will have you horizontal quicker than a dose of barbiturates!

How much is it?

The Shu Uemura Kara hair ceremony & blow dry costs €81 and is available at Jim Hatton, Dunville Avenue, Ranelagh, Dublin. To book a treatment, call 01 497 6840 or see www.jimhatton.ie for more details.
