Each week Independent Woman investigates what's new and cutting edge in the battle to remain young and beautiful. This week we take a long hard look at the massage bed, dig deep within our souls and give ourselves over to The Aura Balance Body Ritual.

What is it?

A treatment which is designed to restore balance and harmony to the body through the use of prescriptive massage and exfoliation. After rough skin has been sloughed away, a full body massage is administered and, depending on your intention, will be designed to relax, uplift or simply inspire. The end result depends on your mood.

Sounds vague, but go on...

The Chakra concept originates from Hindu texts and in this context works with energy points in the body to help with the release of energy. Essentially the idea is that with essential oils to relax and massage to invigorate, the end result is a healthy happier you.

What's the process?

The treatment begins with a fragrant geranium and sea algae body scrub which tones and conditions the skin while it removes the dead skin cells. Once skin has been buffed, it's off to the wash room for a rinse before a full body Ayurvedic massage begins. Essential oils of ginger, lavender and geranium are worked into the skin and hot towels are applied to trap the moisture. Once karma has been restored, the head and feet are treated to a relaxing pressure point massage before skin is finally finished off with a spritz of energising lavender mist.

How does it work?

Not sure. The calming geranium exfoliation is designed to balance the sacral Chakra and calm the mind. Dead Sea salts and cocoa clay exfoliate, firm and then soothe skin, and the ginger infused massage lotion is said to energise the mind and body.

Who's it for?

Anyone feeling a little under the weather. The geranium scrub leaves skin glowing while the full body massage will have even the most deeply troubled spirits calmed in no time. If you love your treatments on the more holistic side, this one's a must.

How long does it take?

Including consultation The Aura Balance Body Ritual takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes

The best bit?

The gentle exfoliation is perfect for waking sleepy winter skin while the moisturising massage left my dry arms and legs in feather soft condition. Skin simply glows afterwards.

Any downsides?

Be careful on the subject of Chakra. Trying to explain the complexities of mystic treatments to members of my family proved difficult. At the very mention of a darkened room and the restoration of Chakra through Indian massage, my mother pointed out the pitfalls that had befallen Tom Cruise, asked me not to hand over any money and looked in the phone book for a service known as deprogramming!

How much is it?

The Aura Balance Body Ritual is €125 and available at Akina Laser and Beauty Clinic, 1a Crow Street,
