Each week Independent Woman investigates what's new and cutting-edge in the battle to remain young and beautiful. This week, in a bid to erase our facial imperfections, we finally began to see the light with a course of IPL treatments.

What is it?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy is a laser treatment designed to zap away facial imperfections. Pigmentation, sun damage, wrinkles, age spots, acne scaring and facial hair can be treated in-salon by a laser device which works with skin to increase collagen production and erase imperfections.

What's the process?

The IPL process involves a consultation with a trained therapist and a series of sessions depending on which areas of the skin you would like to treat. Following an explanation of how IPL works and a patch test which acts to see if skin reacts to the laser used for treatment, short sessions are administered and anything from hyper-pigmentation to acne scarring can be treated.

How does it work?

The laser emits an intense flash of light which penetrates the deeper layers of the dermis and in turn stimulates new collagen production.

This can help reduce fine lines, minimise pore size or acne scars and increase skin elasticity. The laser also reduces redness and brown spots and erases broken capillaries.

That's all well and good .... but does it hurt?

No. As my patch test showed no sign of skin irritability, my treatment for small acne scarring and hyper-pigmentation went fine. There was a little redness afterwards but once my session was over, a quick application of cooling gel helped numb treated areas.

Are you sure?

Trust me. The sensation is no more than the feeling of a small elastic band snapping against your skin!

Are the results immediate?

No. Not exactly. Because the laser treatment works to stimulate collagen production, the results work themselves through over time.

Photographs are also offered for users of IPL to see the before and after effects of treatment.

How long does it take?

Timing varies depending on the size of the area needing treatment. My session took just over 30 minutes.

The best bit?

The result. Having had break-outs on my chin for almost a year, the nasty scar tissue has disappeared and my hyper pigmentation around my nose has cleared up. Also, my Sunday evenings are no longer spent sneaking around the house with Veet on my upper lip!

Any downsides?

You must keep out of the sun and wear daily sun protection in the weeks following your treatment, so timing is everything on this one.

You will also need to avoid swimming pools for a while.

How much is it?

IPL is priced from €600 for a course of treatments and is available at Bellaza Beauty Salon, Ranelagh Rd, Dublin.
